30' PACIFIC YURT

I had a beautiful 30' Pacific Yurt. I purchased it in August 2004. It was set up in mid-October 2004. Once the wooden foundation ("deck") was up, it took my contractor and his crew 2 1/2 days to set up the yurt.

I was very happy in my Yurt. I had found a well-engineered, stable home which did not set-off my Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (see "MCS" page) symptoms. However, my happiness was short-lived.

I only lived in my Yurt for 6 weeks. An old back injury flared up, and I sadly became aware that the deterioration in my spine had progressed to a point that I had become too physically disabled to live on a steep, isolated location (the yurt was on my cousin's land).

I was forced by circumstance to search for another location on flat land. The problem I was facing was not the Yurt--it worked perfectly for me. My problem was the location.

Unfortunately, after a 13 month search, I was unable to find another suitable (and affordable) location. I had to face reality and let my Yurt go. I sold it to a Marine Biologist. So, I know the yurt will have a good home.

The sale price equaled the amount I owed to a friend who had helped me avoid becoming homeless, and had footed the bill for a place to rent until my disability checks began. I am sorry I lost my Yurt, but am happy I was able to repay my financial obligation to my friend.

If anyone is thinking of purchasing a yurt, I am leaving up the details of my Yurt experience on this website. Perhaps the information will be of help to others.

When I initially thought of purchasing a Yurt, I did 2 years of research. I finally decided that a Yurt from Pacific Yurts would meet my needs. I made a good decision going with Pacific Yurts. Their customer service is superb and the quality and engineering of the yurt far exceeded my expectations.

I ordered a 30' Pacific Yurt with the following upgrades (The standard package includes 2 large windows and one door jam):

Heavy-Duty Roof (Gray) (15 year warranty)
Door Awning
Snow and Wind Kit
Central Column System (withstands winds up to 120 mph)
Dome Opener
Tinted Dome
Insulation Liners (Complete Insulation--roof, walls, windows)
Screen Door
Upgrade Door Hardware
Front Wooden Door
Rear Door Frame (for second door or wood stove install)
2 Windows with Insulation Panels
Twist Locks
Water Catchment System (Heavy Duty)

Additional expenses included:
Flooring-Tongue and Groove Kiln Dried White Oak. All materials are designed for individuals with Multiple Chemical Sensitivity ("MCS").
Wooden Deck-labor and materials
Wooden Porch and Steps
2 Wooden Platforms for ease in opening and closing windows
Wiring and materials

My costs for materials in August of 2004 were:

Cost of 30' Yurt with all upgrades was $17,019.13 (incl. Shipping)
Cost of wooden oak floor was $1,507.31
Cost of deck materials was $2,469.11
Cost of Electrical materials was $3,124.00
Total Cost of Materials was $24,119.55

Being physically disabled, I had to hire a contractor to do all the labor. Total labor was $14,000. But you may be able to do your own labor, and significantly decrease the cost of having a Yurt.

I also had a 3,000 water holding tank ($900) and BioLet composting toilet ($1,600. I was about to purchase a corn-burning stove for heat, but realized before I ordered it, that I was not going to be able to remain in my current location.

I loved living in my Yurt. It was very comfortable, beautiful, and safe. While I lived in the Yurt, Mother Nature threw everything she had at my Yurt: 60-80 mph winds, hail, 9" rains overnight--the yurt withstood everything with no problem. I am a writer and had 20 bookcases of books inside. Not one single drop of rain got in. And, no damage of any kind. The Central Column helped me feel safe and secure in high winds. And, just like Pete at Pacific Yurts promised, the hail bounced off the heavy duty roof like a trampoline. So, I know from first-hand experience how well-built and strong my Pacific Yurt is. After experiencing the safety and security of the Pacific Yurt, I was glad I spent the extra money and got a Pacific Yurt. The quality is superb.

I hope one day to find my own piece of FLAT land, and get another Yurt.
